OB Gyn Exam

Fertility Consulting

Scheduling a preconception Ob Gyn exam for fertility consulting is one of the first things you should do when you decide to start trying to conceive. If you don't have a good doctor, then the task of finding one is imperative.

Ideally you should choose a doctor you are comfortable with before you become pregnant. You will be spending 9 or 10 months with this person as your healthcare provider and they will be present at one of the most wonderful events of your life - the birth of your baby.

When choosing a doctor for your first OB Gyn exam for fertility consulting keep these things in mind:

Doctor - Patient Relationship

You can schedule an "interview" exam with your potential doctor. You will want one that:

  • Agrees with your philosophy of pregnancy and childbirth
  • Trustworthy
  • You are comfortable with

Learn from me, I've changed doctors mid-pregnancy because of these issues. It's possible to do but I'd rather start and finish with the same doctor.

Questions to ask during the interview:

  1. What hospital(s) do you practice in?

  2. Go over your desired pregnancy and birth plan to see if they agree with the type of birth experience you wish to have. Have the pregnancy / birth plan written out ahead of time and show it to them. Make sure they are in agreement with your expectations and limitations and make sure they will work with you.

  3. Go over different scenarios such as pre-term labor and or an emergency cesarean section. Find out what they expect of you.

  4. Who are their partners? Will they be the one to deliver the baby or will it be whoever is on call? Will the partners adhere to your pregnancy / birth plan?

Number 4 is very important. In a couple of my pregnancies I found that the partners had their own philosophy and when I was going through pre-term labor and eventually the birth, I ended up with the partners and none of my plans were done. I was unhappy and switched physicians the next time around because of that (even though I was very happy my doctor - I just didn’t want to chance having to deal with their partners again.)

Health Insurance and Hospital

Make sure that your insurance is accepted by the hospital of your choice as well as by the doctor of your choice.

Doctor Location

For some women, choosing a doctor out of town is the only way to have an actual ob gyn exam. Some smaller towns and hospitals won't deliver babies. It's important when choosing a doctor that you choose one as close to you as possible. For me I've had to travel at least 45 minutes. I wouldn’t want to go much further than that. You'll have monthly, bi-monthly then weekly appointments to keep also.

It's important to find a good doctor that will agree with you, one that is located as close as possible and one you are comfortable with. It would be to your benefit to schedule the interview, then the ob gyn exam for fertility consulting  before you become pregnant.
