Hormone Imbalance Cause Infertility

Hormone imbalance cause infertility and this is the top reason couples have trouble trying to conceive. The main area that hormonal imbalance affects is the luteal phase. The luteal phase is the time from ovulation to menstruation. This time must be at least 10 days long in order to maintain a pregnancy. It’s the time when progesterone is at its top production. When the progesterone is out of what – it causes all the hormones of the reproductive system to be out of whack as well.

Normally the luteal phase is around 12 to 14 days. Realistically it can be good and be anywhere from 10 to 17 days long. The norm is 14 days. When the luteal phase falls below 10 day – or when the luteal phase basal body temperatures stay too low this is called a luteal phase defect. The number one culprit is hormone imbalance. Which is why hormone imbalance cause infertility.

A luteal phase that falls below 10 days cannot sustain a pregnancy. This is because the hormone progesterone is too low. If a woman conceives with this problem the pregnancy will more than likely end in an early miscarriage or a chemical pregnancy. The good news is that progesterone – either in the form of a natural progesterone cream or via a prescription for suppositories will remedy this. In this case progesterone needs to be taken until at least the 12th week of pregnancy.

There is good news these days. Luteal phase defects are easily treated with supplements and/or with medications. Most of the imbalances can be treated without the use of invasive drugs. Always seek the advice of your healthcare provider before starting any new supplement or regimen.

Hormone imbalance cause infertility indeed with me as well. When I began charting my fertility signs back in March of 1999 my luteal phase was 9 days. I was breastfeeding my then 15 month old daughter and believe it was the prolactin that’s released during breastfeeding that caused the imbalance.

But that wasn’t good enough for me, since I personally knew women who conceived while breastfeeding. I began to take 63 mg of vitamin B6 and my luteal phase increased that cycle to 11 days. Vitamin B6 helps to regulate the reproductive hormones and most multi-vitamins do not contain enough of the vitamin to do any good. Within 2 months my luteal phase was up to 12 days. I weaned my daughter 2 months later, thinking the breastfeeding was the cause of my infertility.

The following cycle I experienced a chemical pregnancy – a pregnancy that begins and ends within the normal luteal phase. My luteal phase jumped to 14 days that cycle. The following month it dropped back to 13 days and I assumed that it was from the absence of breastfeeding. However to prevent further early miscarriages, I began using a natural progesterone cream. This increased my luteal phase to 15 days.

I finally did conceive about 5 months later. The progesterone cream and vitamin B6 lengthened my luteal phase. I also took one baby aspirin a day to help with the blood flow to the reproductive organs and stopped the baby aspirin at about 7 weeks.

If you think that hormone imbalance cause infertility in you don’t feel hopeless. Chart your fertility signs so you can pinpoint the exact day of ovulation and find out how long your luteal phase is. The decision on what measures to take to correct the luteal phase defect and hormonal imbalances are up to your and the advice of your healthcare provider. I personally did not ask my doctor about the progesterone cream or the vitamin B6, but it would be smart if you seek their advice first.
