First Month Pregnancy Symptoms

What to Expect In the Beginning

First month pregnancy symptoms consist of the missed period, frequent urination, food aversions / cravings, fatigue, crampiness, excitement, fear. You may have none of the first symptoms of pregnancy or some or all of these. Once you see that positive pregnancy test (one of the postivie proof signs of early pregnancy) you will want to call your healthcare provider to make an appointment to have it confirmed.
This will start the ball rolling for a healthy pregnancy.

Decide if you want to see a midwife or a doctor that specializes in pregnancy called an obstetrician (OB). You will want someone with whom you are comfortable, because you will be seeing them a lot over the next 8 to 9 months. The first appointment will be a series of questions about your health and about your family's health. Possibly you will have blood work drawn too.

Before that first appointment write down any questions or concerns you may have. The first appointment you may only see the nurse for the questions and a lab tech for the blood work. You will be given a bag of goodies (in most offices) that will have brochures / books / coupons and other items that pertain to a new pregnancy. You will start your appointments and will be set up for the next appointment before you leave.

In those pregnancy first weeks you will go through many emotions, and especially if this is your first baby. It's all new and unknown. For example it's perfectly normal to experience cramping in early pregnancy. Read books about it, read websites about it and talk to other moms who have been there. You will be given prenatal vitamins to take - and this is extremely important to take these to help prevent certain birth defects and to insure that you are in as healthy condition as possible.

Your first ultrasounds may be given anytime from around 9 weeks and on. The timing of these depends on your healthcare provider and their philosophy about it. Ultrasounds are a way to take a good look at the baby, to see if they are growing and thriving.

By the middle of your pregnancy you may be tested for gestational diabetes. This test consists of drinking a sugary substance called Glucola and your blood will be drawn an hour after the drink has been consumed. If it's normal then there will be no need for further testing. If your blood sugar was high you will need to come back for further testing.

Generally your appointments will be every 4 weeks until you reach around 27 weeks. Then you may be seen every 2 weeks until you are 36 weeks along. At that point you will be seen weekly. (For a high risk pregnancy you may be seen more often.) By the time you reach those weekly visits you will probably not remember those first month pregnancy symptoms as clearly as you did in the beginning.
