Clarifying the Facts and Myths about Ovulation

In order to properly use a fertility days calculator you must first realize that ovulation does not necessarily occur on day 14. For years women have been told that if they wish to get pregnant they must have sex around day 14 of their cycles. Women who didn't conceive on this knowledge were deemed infertile. And many women conceived when they used this knowledge to avoid pregnancy.

Fertility Days Calculator Day 14 Myth

The truth is that ovulation can happen as early as day six and could happen much much later than day 14. There are several factors involved in the timing of ovulation:
  •  Hormones
  •  Stress
  • Your Health

The hormones that will affect the fertility days calculator for the female reproductive cycle are:

  • Estrogen
This begins surging through the body roughly 3 or more days before ovulation. This causes the cervical fluid to be clear, thin and stretchy - the most fertile type. This type of cervical fluid is referred to as egg-white cervical mucus or EWCM. EWCM offers the best mode of travel for the sperm to reach the egg.

  • Follicle Stimulating Hormone (FSH)
This is the first hormone to appear in the reproductive cycle of a woman. FSH begins its peak production at the beginning of the cycle, while the uterus is shedding its lining. FSH prompts the ovaries to produce about 15 to 20 mature eggs. Each of these eggs are encased in its own follicle. These follicles will then produce estrogen.

  • Luteinizing Hormone (LH)
LH is produced when the high levels of estrogen prompts it. The surge of LH causes the egg to pop out of its follicle.

  • Progesterone
When the follicle collapses after the egg is released the corpus luteum forms. This is what begins the production of progesterone. Progesterone helps to maintain the uterine lining long enough for a fertilized egg to implant. It's responsible for raising the basal body temperature, also known as the “warm hormone.” In the fertility chart  you can tell when ovulation occurs by the upward shift in the temperatures. Thus a drop in the temperatures shows that progesterone has dropped and signals the end of the cycle and the beginning of the new one.

Any imbalances in these hormones can impede or prevent ovulation.

The luteal phase (LP) is the time from ovulation to menstruation. The average length of the LP is from 12 to 16 days. However the LP can be longer or shorter. An LP shorter than 10 days is considered deficient in progesterone, and is unable to maintain a pregnancy. There are measures to increase the LP, such as hormone therapy and natural remedies with herbs and vitamins. No matter what day a woman ovulates, she can be pretty sure her LP will be the same from cycle to cycle. This is the best way to know when to take a pregnancy test.

Fertility Days Calculator Truth about Ovulation and Stress and Your Health

Since pregnancy is the goal you need to have intercourse around the time of ovulation. It's best to do this several days before - the day of and the maybe even the day of the temperature rise. There are times when a woman's body will prepare for ovulation and release all the right hormones and stress will halt the process.

Stress can be from vacations, moving, having company or anything along these lines can delay ovulation until you are at peace and feel relaxed again.

The role of hormones combined with your state of health be it illness or stress determines when and if ovulation will happen.

Sometimes ovulation does occur on day 14. Because the different elements that bring about ovulation can be varied or interrupted, it's safe to say that ovulation can occur at any point in the cycle. To properly use afertility days calculator you really need to chart all your fertility signs, so you can pinpoint the exact day ovulation happens and take out the guesswork.
