Bad habits should be broken while in the preconception stages. Habits such as smoking, drinking alcohol and excessive caffeine are detrimental to pregnancy. But the fact that you can be pregnant for up to 2 weeks before you even know about is reason enough to get into good practices now. The most critical time in the development of the baby is the first trimester. You want your body clean from contaminants and in optimal health to grow your baby. Proper nutrition is as important as taking a good prenatal
vitamin. Eat from all the food groups to both offer better chances
with conceiving a healthy baby and to put yourself in a state of
well being. Eating healthy from the start makes you feel better,
have more energy and stave off illnesses. Eat foods high in calcium and iron. This helps your bones and
blood to be healthy enough to carry a baby. Dairy foods contain
calcium. Iron is found mostly in enriched bread; prune juice; nuts,
including cashews, pistachios, and walnuts; caviar; cheddar cheese;
egg yolks; chickpeas; lentils; pumpkin seeds; black-strap molasses;
mussels; wheat germ; whole-grain products; and seaweed and red
meats. If you are unable to eat any of these there are supplements
that have extra iron and calcium – but never take these without
advice from your healthcare provider first.
