Is there a relation between caffeine and infertility? The truth is that caffeine isn't generally good for us when we're not trying to conceive let alone when we are.
It's always recommended to adopt healthy habits before we conceive. Ideally we would cut out
alcohol, drugs, smoking and cut back on the caffeine intake before we ever start trying. There are babies
conceived all the time with these habits in place and go on to make it, but there are as many who either
don’t make it or who will suffer as a result of their parents' bad habits.
Exactly how caffeine and infertility are related isn't set in concrete. Researchers and
scientists have been unable to draw any conclusions on the effects of caffeine during pregnancy.
The truth is there seems to be a higher occurrence of problems such as miscarriages and lower birth
weight with a high intake of caffeine.
The thought of "possibly causing a miscarriage" should be
enough for you to change your bad habits. When it comes to fertility and miscarriage, every measure should be taken to give yourself the best chance with a healthy fertility and do nothing that could cause a miscarriage.
Even though it's not medically proven, there's been plenty of
speculation on caffeine and infertility because of the rise in both miscarriages and low birth rates
when caffeine was used. Most physicians today will strongly encourage you to cut back on the
consumption of caffeine if you are trying to conceive.
The March of Dimes has strong
advice against caffeine intake before and during pregnancy. They even say that there is strong
evidence of not only miscarriage and low birth weight but preterm labor as well.
Kicking the caffeine habit before getting pregnant would be a smart thing to do. Keep in
mind that caffeine is found in more than just coffee, sodas and tea. Chocolate contains caffeine
and so do certain pain relievers. However I'm a major chocoholic and I've never been able to
complete kick the habit cold turkey. But I do drink decaffeinated drinks and plenty of water
and have one serving of chocolate a day! If you can completely kick the habit – kudos to you!
